Welcome to our blog!

Thank you for your interest in Piney Mountain Orchard.  At this moment, around Thanksgiving 2011, the gritty details of next season's Community Supported Agriculture are still to be determined.  I'm working on this blog now to provide a venue for those who would like to become members or are simply curious about the farm's development.

Our Progress, so far ....
Well, we are really getting into the thick of it these days.  On Sunday, we picked up three sheep from our friends at Juniper Moon Farm in Virginia.   Victoria, Delaware, and Dakota are Cormo sheep renowned for their beautiful wool, and have joined us to retire from breeding and give us the pleasure of their company.  They were welcomed by our faithful goat Smudge, who is happy to have company but a little disappointed to be out of the spotlight.  We are also happy friends to a small flock of chickens and an ever changing population of shy barn cats.
In terms of vegetable production, we are in the process of building a humble greenhouse for starting seedlings in early Spring.  We are also the proud owners of a 1959 Ford Workmaster tractor, with which we broke ground this summer for our kitchen garden.  I also tilled up half an acre and planted cover crops just in time for our Halloween snow storm.  I'm hopeful that we will still get adequate cover in time for winter.
As winter does take over, I will continue my farm planning by completing my crop and business plans.  Membership sign up and seed orders will coincide in January, and as long as I keep the faith during February, March will mark the exciting start of Piney Mountain Orchard  CSA's first growing season.  I can't wait!

About Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA

Our CSA offers a direct relationship between farmer and consumer.  In exchange for supporting our farm up front early in the season, members will get a steady supply of fresh, locally grown food - free of artificial fertilizers and pesticides.  The CSA model supports community-oriented, small-scale farmers committed to sustainable growing practices.   As a member you become a share-holder in Piney Mountain Orchard.  You will have ample opportunities to visit and work on the farm, and can take ownership and pride in each vegetable that makes its way your  table.

Just some of the benefits of joining are
  • Receiving high quality produce, grown with your health and the health of the soil in mind.
  • Eating healthy, nutritious foods, picked fresh and in season.
  • Knowing and working with the people that grow your food.
  • Increasing your knowledge of fruits and vegetables, and learning new ways to prepare them in your kitchen.

Membership details are coming soon, thanks for visiting!
